How Many Pillows Does it take to make a bed?

It is a great time of year. The leaves are starting to come out and the flowers are starting to bud.  With spring flowers, we see the weather start to change from cold to milder temperatures.

Since the weather is changing, this is a good time to switch your winter bedding to more vibrant colors.  I change my comforters every quarter to match the season.  I purposely don’t buy super expensive bedding with the exception of sheets for the spring and summer months because there is always something new and beautiful out there to help renew life in our bedroom.

How often to you change your comforter and bedding? Most of us who live in places where it gets cold in the winter opt for a heavier comforter or duvet. In the summer, we switch to something lighter.  But often what we don’t change are our pillows.

When was the last time you changed your pillows?

Did you know that the average person spends six to eight hours a night lying on their pillows?  That means that, each month, a pillow gets between 180 to 240 hours of wear.   That is a lot of time—especially for an inexpensive pillow.  Some of you are saying: “I just changed my bedding. My pillows look great. They are white and beautiful.”  If you look at mine, you would see the same.  But, it’s not just about appearance!

The Reasons to Change your Pillows

Pillows are a breeding ground for dust mites and odor.  If you think about it: Pillows serve a lot of functions.  We sleep on them and we use them as support when we are sitting in bed watching television.  They are used sometimes in intimate motions and as toys for pillow fights.   Over time, with all the many uses, pillows tend to lose their shape, firmness, and accumulate odor.

How often should you Change your Pillows?

I personally change my pillows in spring and winter.  I might be on the extreme end but that is what works best for me. I normally change them in the spring because the cold season is over and it is good to start with a fresh pillow as we go into allergy season.  I change them again in the winter because the summer is over and all the extra oils and things that we use on our bodies have absorbed into the pillows. At that time, I am starting to see a little wear and tear on my pillow covers.   For the guestroom, I tend to change out the pillows once a year depending on our company load for that year.

Freshening up your Pillows

I know that changing your pillows can be expensive. So, if that is not an option or you would like to clean your pillows more often, you can wash them. Make sure that you check the tags prior to washing them.  Depending on the type of pillows, this could require more than one step.  Some vacuum cleaners like the Rainbow Vacuum system have an alternative for freshening up your pillows.

Switching your Comforters

Personally, I love having a new comforter set. I love the feeling of sleeping under something new. It is an inexpensive way to spice up a room that is starting to look tired and dated. If you are renting and you cannot paint or hang artwork, splashing in some color through bedding and accessories can give you that feeling of ownership that you would love to have.   Changing your bedroom can be inexpensive if you shop for good deals. I like to shop at stores like: Home Goods, TJ Maxx, and Ross.  Sometimes, you find something amazing at a fraction of the cost of a large department store.   Also, check the clearance section of many department stores. You may find some incredible deals. Here is what I was able to do for under $250.00 excluding the cost of new pillows for my spring look.

Bedroom One (Master Suite) $88.00

Masterbed room

Bedroom Two (Guest Suite)   $67.00

Guest Bedroom

Bedroom Three (Child’s Room) $95.00

Each room looks gorgeous and ready for springtime.   So this spring, as you are pulling off your winter bed coverings and getting ready for spring, consider a new comforter set and don’t forget to check those pillows!

  1. Wow, what a great idea about changing out the pillows. I will be doing that since I have sinus issues. very informative and helpful post! Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Wanda,

Changing your pillows could really help with your sinus issues. Most of us don’t think about changing out our pillows. We change our bedding and try to keep rooms clean to help prevent allegries from getting worse but pillows are just something that we keep around for years. I really hope your new pillows help you!

  2. We have two comforter sets, one for fall/winter and one for spring/summer. I’m excited to begin using our summer set as soon as it stops snowing!

  3. I’m always looking for pillows and changing them out. Can’t find the right comfort from them. It’s truly a nightmare. With having a pibbles around that is always on the bed, we use a blanket that is year round comfort. Can’t remember the name of it but found it on Amazon one time, bought it, then bought another. They are fabulous. Keeps ya warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and very soft on the skin. Great post Cynthia!

    • HI Bren,

That would be an awesome blanket to have on your bed. I do have heavy winter bedding. I tend to invest in my bedding because I like to be cozy in the winter. I am one of those people who like the heat to be down a little so I can get deep under the covers. I have an issue with pillows as you can tell. And it is hard to find pillows that are comfortable. You can try out everything except pillows. And they are important and hard to tell how they are for sleeping by just squeezing them.

  4. Hi Gail,

We are lucky. We don’t suffer from any allegries. I am very good about changing my pillows, sheets and comforters plus I love my rainbow vaccum that I run in the morning to ensure we start out with a dose of clean air. Changing comforters is something small that you can do and it gives the feel of redocating your room. And it does not cost a lot. I am always amazed at what I can find on a small budget even when decorating three rooms. Hope you are having a great day.

  5. You put me to shame, Cynthia! I am lucky to get duvet and pillows changed twice a year. It’s a really good idea, though and I will be more diligent about it as my husband is allergic to dust and feathers and …you name it!
